Doctor Who season 13 is nearly here! Russell T. Davies first revived the sci-fi show with Christopher Eccleston 17 years ago, and the Doctor has been saving the world from countless alien threats ever since.
Jodie Whittaker is the current custodian of the TARDIS, although we now know that this will be her last full season as the Doctor. Aside from three additional specials which will air in 2022, this is Jodie’s final adventure across space and time.
We’ve been being drip-fed more and more news about the new season of Doctor Who season 13 recently. We finally got a release date and new trailer not that long ago, and we’re now just days away from the return of the Thirteenth Doctor!
Subtitled Doctor Who: Flux, the new season promises to introduce us to monsters and aliens old and new. Jodie Whittaker says this season is “bigger and better than ever” and promises “there’ll be questions asked, there’ll be answers, there’ll be exclamation marks, and huge exclamation marks” throughout the series.
‘Doctor Who’ season 13 release date
For the longest time, we only knew that Jodie would be back “later this year” in a teaser released over the summer.
Now, we know that Doctor Who: Flux will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 6:25 pm on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer. Episodes will release weekly on Sundays, with the final episode of the new season set to air on Dec. 5.
How many episodes will ‘Doctor Who’ season 13 have?
The upcoming season of Doctor Who will be shorter than fans would want. Initially, Doctor Who season 13 was planned for an 11 episode run. Due to the impact of COVID-19, filming was delayed, and the new season was cut down to a shorter run of just 6 episodes with two specials to follow in 2022.
One of these specials will be the usual Doctor Who Christmas special 2021 (airing on New Year’s Day), with the other following in Spring next year.
When the BBC revealed that Jodie Whittaker would be leaving, they also announced that a third and final feature-length adventure had been commissioned to help celebrate the BBC’s centenary next year. This extra episode will air in autumn 2022, and will see the next Doctor taking over.
The Thirteenth Doctor enjoyed having her “fam” around her, but the 2020 Christmas Special saw her group of companions parting ways. Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Ryan (Tosin Cole) both decided to leave the TARDIS behind for good at the end of the episode.
We now know that the Doctor and Yaz will pick up the newest companion, Dan Lewis (played by John Bishop), in the first episode of the new season.
Speaking about his first day on set, John told us: “Well the problem is, you’ve got to remember I was all excited about being on the TARDIS. Then on the first day, there was some movement of the TARDIS and they said ‘throw yourself’, so I literally threw myself around, and everyone went ‘what are you doing? There’s no crash mat, we haven’t got a stunt double, we haven’t done a risk assessment!’. I said, ‘well, every time I watch it, this is what happens’, and they’re going ‘no, no, you just have to wobble, and the camera wobbles!’.
“I have to be honest, there’s so much more action than I was expecting — I’ve seen a little bit of the first episode, and it already looks a bit epic!”

It’s almost time to watch Doctor Who season 13 online — with or without cable or the BBC — but this year’s a little different. Not only are we starting off with a Halloween episode (perfect timing, given the airing date), but the series is going to tell one whole storyline across its episodes and it also has its own title — Doctor Who: Flux.
That said, it’s only got a runway for six episodes, so they’re likely going to make each of them count.
Early reports about the monsters this season are varied, with a likely pleasing mix of new and old. Expect the return of the armored humanoid Sontarans and the tentacle-faced Ood. We should also see some Weeping Angels as well.
This is also Whittaker’s final season, but don’t think she was given a short season because of her departure; instead, Covid-19-related filming interruptions cut the Doctor Who season 13 down from 11 to six episodes. That said, this isn’t her end with the series: three specials coming in 2022 will be her swan song.
As for companions, Whittaker will still be joined by PC Yasmin “Yaz” Khan (Mandip Gill), and new companion Dan Lewis (John Bishop) will first occur in the show while he’s working at a food bank. Another new piece of casting is Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as Vinder, of whom we know nothing.
